Justin Smith
Who am I? I'm Batman.... Wait... this isn't the 'which super hero do I most relate to' questionnaire is it?
I'm me, male. Married, two kids.
I can build; shoot; hunt; fish; write articulately; build and maintain PC's; Run / design / implement web sites and much much more!
Plus, I suppose I kinda like Android devices....
Why do we do it? – Personal thoughts on ever changing technology and our lust for it.
Technology – Every day our lives are affected and influenced more and more by the ever onwards marching technological sector.
For people like us (yes, I just grouped you all with me!) the ever changing smart ‘device’ market means that more often than not, the device we buy today will be outdated in a mere few months, sometimes weeks and less often days.
2012: The year that Intel fights back??
Recently Intel has unveiled a prototype smartphone, slated for release in 2012. Ask anyone to name a founding father of the personal computer, and one of the names to arise will surely be microprocessor manufacturer, Intel.
With the likes of UK based ARM delivering the processing power to many smartphones to date, 2012 may see the rise of the proverbial sleeping bear, with Intel looking to release not only a smartphone, but also a tablet in 2012.
Androidify Your TV!
Browsing the Jaycar web page on a Saturday morning as we all do... Ok, as I do.. I came across this little unit dubbed 'Android Smart TV Media Player'. Straight away I was intrigued and had to share it all with our avid readers!
With all of the devices making there way into the home today, the media hub is one of them that hasn't evolved from the small box that allows streaming media from our PC's to our TV.
Hands On: HTC Explorer
When looking at the word ‘Explorer’, several other words come to mind; Adventure, excitement, risk, strength…. So when first tasked with reviewing the new HTC Explorer, I thought of a unit not dissimilar from the Motorola Defy… On reading up on the unit, I was slightly saddened that this was not the case – BUT – after spending some time with the unit, I found while the unit is not waterproof or ready for a full frontal assault on an enemy gun emplacement – it is a very capable entry level smartphone. But if you have money burning a hole in your pocket from Christmas, or are in need of a replacement phone due to unforeseen circumstances… the Explorer from HTC may be just what you are looking for.
App Review: Blogger
First of all - The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated!
Right, onto the reason you are all actually here - the reviewing!
I have always been a bit of a writer, blogging has always appealed to me; to the extent that I even have my own... Though the content etc. has been minimal to none since its upload due to my busy schedule.
Being somewhat stupid sometimes, looking for a blogger app for my Android powered device to allow me blog on the go slipped my mind, until now!
The Battle of the Tablets: Some of the hottest up and coming Android Tablets of 2011
Does the idea of a Tablet excite you? You sit there for hours wondering which one you should spend your hard earned cash on? Well if you can wait just a little while longer, there are some very exciting new additions to the Android Tablet family on the near horizon.
Today I am going to introduce you to some of these up and coming devices, and give you my $.05 worth of advice on which ones you should look at as a possible new addition to your gadget family.
Now, just a quick note: I am in no way putting these devices in order of preference so don’t think that the first is the best; I will summaries my opinions at the end of the article.
One Stand to Rule Them All - Introducing the Oona
I often find myself thinking 'If only I had a stand for my phone that could do (insert what you want the stand to do here)'. Sure, my Milestone came with a cradle, but it is only useful for a small amount of things, well, one thing, sticking to the windscreen of my Hilux when being used as a Nav System.
While trawling through various Android related sites, I came across a link to the Oona - A currently in development gadget created by a couple of engineering students I believe, and being funded by kickstarter.com.
While the Oona is not a highly complicated piece of engineering wonder, it does look like the designers have put a lot of thought into what they wanted their little block of aluminium to achieve exactly what they wanted.
Justin's App of the Day - Tiny Flashlight + LED
Most of us have found ourselves rummaging round somewhere dark looking for a key, a lost trinket or some spare change thinking to ourselves 'I really wish I had a torch now, but the light given off by my cell screen just isn't bright enough!'
Enter the Tiny Flashlight +LED App!
This little App utilises the flash on your devices camera (usually one if not two high intensity LED bulbs) to create a pretty bright torch like light from the rear of your phone.
Tablets, Tablets, Everywhere, Now One From HTC: Introducing The HTC Flyer
It seems that with the success of the iPad & iPad2, every man and his dog, cat, wife and second cousin twice removed are coming out with a tablet device of some description. Launching some time this quarter, the HTC Flyer has some interesting additions, including a pressure sensitive stylus and accompanying software that HTC have dubbed 'Scribe'. The seemingly stone age Flyer, compared to the already launched Xoom, may just fail before it even hits the shelves.
But enough of the playful banter, lets get stuck into the deep stuff, and look at the facts and figures before we condemn the Flyer to a death by firing squad.
Review; Motorola Atrix 4G
Blazing fast, beautiful and versatile, the Atrix 4G is set to turn the way we look at mobile devices on its head, and then some.
Dubbed as the 'world’s most powerful smart phone', I sit here salivating over the photos and specs of the beast and think 'how am I going to acquire myself one of these little beauty’s at no cost, and get to keep it after I play with it?'...
Right! Back to reality, lets get into it!
