Galaxy Nexus now has official MIUI ICS
Good news for Galaxy Nexus owners. One of the leading custom ROM's in the world, MIUI, has now released an official build for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. MIUI has often been referred to as an iOS look alike, but it's so much more. If I was to explain it, I would say that it's iOS on steroids. There are themes and tweaks that you can run on your Android device using MIUI. The ROM version is V4 which means you still get Android 4.0.3. You'll need to have a rooted Galaxy Nexus to get MIUI on it.
[Review]Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Firstly, a big apology for not getting this out sooner. I’ve been busy tweaking the site and making sure you guys get a great experience for you Droid fans in New Zealand. Anyway, enough of that, let’s get on with this overdue review.
The Galaxy Nexus, where to start. This is the first phone to feature Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, without a custom user interface. The experience is vanilla Android. I have been through quite a few devices on my journey to the Galaxy Nexus, including the Samsung Galaxy S2. I’ll do my best to compare it to the S2 so you’re aware of the differences.
Galaxy Nexus gets a Ninja unboxing
The genius who brough us the Ninja unboxing of the Nexus One and Nexus S has now worked his magic to produce the 3rd in the series. Patrick Boivin is the genius and has just released Ninja Unboxing 3. There's a big difference for this episode of ninja unboxing. You take control of the red ninja in an 8 bit retro style game to unbox the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The game is somewhat addictive and can be played from the youtube video. Once you're done you can download the game for your Android device from the market. The game is free and has more levels than the youtube teaser. For those of you that haven't heard of ninja unboxing, you're in for a treat. Let us know what you think.
For those of you getting a Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Xmas, take a look at my day one reflection of the device. I'll post a full review soon.
Keep the Ice Cream Sandwich look
Ok, I'm now a few days in with my Galaxy Nexus and the user interface has completely won me over. Yesterday Blair wrote an article about a leaked version of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Samsung Galaxy S2. The leaked software allegedly from Samsung had their TouchWiz user interface over the top of ICS. To be honest, I couldn't tell if it was Android 4.0 or still Gingerbread. Yes, I could see some Android 4.0 features embedded within TouchWiz such as the settings. But overall it looks the just the same. If I was still using my Galaxy S2 I'd be disappointed at this development. The stock look of pure Ice Cream Sandwich is gorgeous. As I said in my previous article about a day to reflect on the Galaxy Nexus, it's like running a version of Honeycomb on your phone.
A day to reflect on the Galaxy Nexus
My Samsung Galaxy Nexus arrived late afternoon yesterday. I've had a bit of a play but have spent most of today travelling to AUS for business. Thought I'd update you all as to my thoughts on the Galaxy Nexus, Google's new superphone. I've had a few frustrations aswell. We'll get in to that in a minute. First of all, the phone is a beast. If you're coming from a compact to medium sized handset, it's going to freak you out. I found that I even noticed the increase in size from the Galaxy S2, and that phone isn't small. The thin sleek frame of the device means that the phone is nice to hold. For some reason it doesn't feel like you're holding a phone that some people may think borders close to tablet size. Maybe it's the 4.65 inch screen. I dig it though!
Co-founder of Apple goes Galaxy Nexus
Steve Wozniak visited Google to pick up his shiny new Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Why is this news? Well Steve Wozniak was one of the co-founders of Apple. He no longer works for Apple but would no doubt still have strong affiliations. The Woz as he is known, visited the Google Campus to get a Nexus and an Android tshirt at the Google event. He also had the customary picture in front of the Android statues on the lawn. It's very cool to see someone of his stature that uses an iPhone every day, pick up the latest Android device. Will the Nexus replace his iPhone? Your guess is as good as any.
Galaxy Nexus: Say Hello to Google’s New Baby
With the imminent arrival of the Galaxy Nexus, we thought we'd get the blood pumping again. Get psyched up...
Over the last few years, the Google-owned Android operating system has been the only real threat to Apple's dominance of the smartphone market. In late 2011, the third generation of the Google Nexus phone will be released. Manufactured by Samsung, the Galaxy Nexus is built around some fairly impressive hardware. The massive 4.6 inch screen dwarfs the 3.5 inch effort mustered by the iPhone. The Nexus screen also features Samsung's HD Super AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology, this is a step up from the Super AMOLED Plus specification that is seen on the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy WiFi.
Samsung Galaxy Nexus Boot, Recovery Images and System Dump up for Grabs
After getting the full root treatment just the other day, the same Paul O'Brien of MoDaCo has made the boot and recovery images of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus avaiable for download. Also included is a full system dump from the upcoming flagship Android smartphone.
Why exactly do we need these three files? Well, they are great pieces of data for any Android developer or hacker. While Joe Bloggs will be able to explore the system dump for wallpapers and other graphics for use on other devices, even if the resolution ratio is different on the Galaxy Nexus compared to most other smartphones.
Galaxy Nexus gets rooted already....
A well known past time for us Android fans is to root a device pretty much as soon as we get it. So really it was written well before it was conceived that the newest Google device would one day, some how by some one get rooted. It may be no surprise to some that this has already happened.
The guys over at MoDaCo have achieved that very tick off / trophey / achievement. Applying the Superboot boot.img is one of the most easiest ways of obtaining root I have seen and comes as a nice Christmas pressy for those that intend on picking up a Galaxy Nexus.
Ice Cream Sandwich and the Galaxy Nexus: What We Learnt Today
I’ll start off by thanking everyone that joined our live blog covering the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich event.
Now while some lucky media get to toy around the with the Galaxy Nexus in person I’ll be going through the blog and summarising all the main points we learnt for you.
From about 2 PM today I was presented a live Youtube feed with some rather creepy music and the stream saying the event will start shortly.
