Spring Jelly Bean

We reported here late last year that the follow up to Android 4.0, AKA Ice Cream Sandwich, would be codenamed Jelly Bean. Well now further rumours have surfaced to reinforce that story, as well as give the next OS a prospective Spring 2012 release slot. To avoid further northern/southern hemisphere seasonal technicalities, we'll now refer to that as Q2 2012. Unless you're in possession of a blessed Galaxy Nexus, or are one of the many out there ROMing your devices to get the latest, greatest and unstable'est builds of 4.03 on your device, you won't even have come in to contact with ICS yet.

But with this news that puts the release of Jelly Bean just 2-3 months away. No-one can accuse Google of resting on it's laurels, and perhaps the imminent arrival of Windows 8 has got the production line at the Google chocolate factory ramped up.

Alongside rumours touting this as "tablet-friendlier" one can only assume that Chrome will come bundled with the device. This does indeed lead to further confusion as to where Google are taking Chrome OS and Android. We've now got the undeniably great Chrome able to work across multiple platforms, but with the ability for it to sync all your docs and data, such as on a Chromebook, as well as all the applications and games supported with the Chrome browser, where does this leave the Android OS as a whole?

Ask yourself this, when have you last acknowledged an update to your Chrome browser on your PC? A quick check of my version and I find that it's already up to date, or in the process of doing so. Could the increasingly frequent updates to Android be a signal that Google are working towards some kind of OS on continuous delivery, where the latest feature is not something to boost sales figures, but rather the bleeding edge OS availability sets this apart from anything else out there (I mention no names, for fear of being sued).
