My brother in law (a good man) has kindly donated two brand new devices to me; the Motorola Backflip and Flipout. They're at the low end of the device range, running Android 1.5. I gave the Backflip the treatment last night and have it running Android 2.3.7. It's now very usable. The Flipout is going to get the same treatment. I was deep in thought on the way to work this morning. "What am I going to do with these phones?" And then a lightbulb moment occurred, these could be loan phones for the AMNZ community. For times when things go horribly wrong. You brick your device or smash the screen and it needs to be sent off for repair. What do you do for a phone? This is the answer.
I will gladly loan these two phones out to the Android New Zealand community. All I ask is that you organise a courier for pickup and drop off. When you're done, you send it back to me. This is for short term use only ie. you have a phone being sent for repair. A week or two at the most. Please do your best to keep the phone in the condition you receive it in. It's hard to loan out a phone if the screen is heavily scratched.
The Backflip will be available as of tomorrow and the Flipout will probably be good to go from next week. I know they're nothing flashy, just something to keep you going in a time of need.
